Researchers believe tidal flooding in Miami and Key West will increase dramatically over the next fifteen years. This week’s annual “King Tide” was seen by many as a preview of this flooding. Taking advantage of this unusually high rise in sea level, students from Florida International University's Biscayne Bay Campus were on hand to measure and study the flooding in the hopes the data collected will help coastal cities in the future.

Wednesday night, Miami-Dade County Commissioners overwhelmingly backed a referendum that would allow Florida International University to expand its main campus, while relocating the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair at Tamiami Park. If county voters approve this question on the November ballot, FIU, through the state budget, would pay 900 million dollars for the new campus and would also have to finance the youth fair's move.

Also on the ballot were a number of amendments including medical marijuana, which surprised many when it failed to pass by two percentage points. Our panel discusses what this midterm election means for Republicans, Democrats and the state of Florida.

Last month, Miami-Dade County Commissioners approved the budget, which will take effect this week, increasing the county's tax rate less than one percent over this year, avoiding both police layoffs and a 25-cent increase to public transit fares. Though some commissioners praised Mayor Carlos Gimenez for this final budget, Commissioner Xavier Suarez says there is still much more that can be done to streamline county government.
