My guest on this episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast is Steve Alcorn, who worked as an engineering consultant for Disney in 1982. His primary assignment was The American Adventure, which used an extremely complex show system unlike anything ever built. Steve has remarkable stories about the chaos of the construction during that time period. The young team dealt with huge odds against them and succeeded despite the challenges. Steve also worked on the Imagination pavilion and Horizons prior to their openings in 1983.

Steve is also the CEO of Alcorn McBride Inc., which has provided video, audio, and show control systems at theme parks for more than 30 years. Our fun conversation includes a discussion of these topics:

* How did Steve get started in theme parks and working at Disney?
* Why was The American Adventure such a complicated system to develop?
* How chaotic was the EPCOT Center construction site in the summer of 1982?
* What was the big challenge in making the Journey Into Imagination ride work?
* How has the theme park industry changed in the past 30 years?
* What are the ways to keep screen-based attractions from becoming obsolete?

My guest for the latest episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast is Doug Barnes, who started The Season Pass in 2007 with little idea of what it would become. Eight years later, it remains the place where the big names from the past and present of theme parks tell their stories. Doug talks about the origins of his fandom and the evolution of The Season Pass into an industry giant. Once Brent Young joined as co-host and they discovered the right format, high-profile guests became the norm on the show. Doug also recounts what it was like to interview legends of Imagineering like Tony Baxter (at his house!).

AJ and I discuss the beginnings of her Disney fandom and what inspired her to start the The Disney Food Blog. She was definitely ahead of the curve in a changing online world back in 2009. We cover upcoming changes to the Disney Dining Plan, AJ’s favorite spots at Disney Springs, and the tricks when visiting a Disney restaurant to write a dining review. Always ask for a four-top table, even if you’re alone. AJ also describes the challenges in covering the International Food & Wine Festival in Epcot, especially when she worked solo in the site’s early days. It isn’t always so glamorous to cover dining, even in a magical place like Disney World.

During this episode, James and I discuss his plans for the upcoming film, Foolish Mortals, plus his personal background with the Mansion and theme parks in general. An interesting part of this production is Carter’s choice to use a newly built digital 3D recreation of the attraction in place of shooting ride footage.

How Bowers is my guest on the latest episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast to discuss the Retro Disney World Podcast and a lot more. We talk about what attracted him to Disney World as a kid in the ‘70s and well into adulthood. As a Florida resident, How visited regularly and has seen each era for the resort. Our fun conversation also covers these topics:

* How did the Retro Disney World Podcast originally come together?
* Where are they able to uncover so much research and archival films?
* What was it like to host a special event at The Living Seas with Bob Gurr?
* Why are Disney fans becoming more interested in extinct attractions today?
* What crazy adventures did How take in the parks with Hoot Gibson?

Matt Parrish is my guest on Episode 42 of the Tomorrow Society Podcast. He also hosts the Thirty20Eight podcast with Kevin Quigley, and they cover both history and the current parks. Matt and I discuss his work on WEDWay Radio and the Thirty20Eight and each show’s origins. We also cover the differences in hosting a live presentation versus an audio podcast. This is the final season of WEDWay Radio, and Matt talks about the reasons for concluding the show after such a long time.

Matt lives on the other side of Missouri in Springfield, so we spend a little time on Silver Dollar City. That park has some truly odd attractions, so I had to get Matt’s thoughts on them.

On the latest episode of the Tomorrow Society Podcast, I spoke to Gennawey about the book and what interested him about Jay Stein’s story. We also discussed the very different approaches of Universal and Disney over the years and how they’re evolving. Gennawey has written books about Disneyland and the original EPCOT plans, so he also knows a lot about the Disney parks. It was refreshing to hear a fresh take on how both organizations function today. Particularly in Florida, their histories intersect in fascinating ways. Universal’s growing momentum is pushing Disney to be more proactive, which should be a bonus for theme parks fans.
